Practical Life is the foundation for success in every other area of Montessori education. The activities come from everyday life and help children develop independence, a sense of order, concentration, responsibility, and coordination of movement.
Children practise care of self, care of the indoor and outdoor environment, as well as grace and courtesy. Each purposeful activity supports logical thinking and builds confidence through meaningful work.
Sensorial materials educate the senses and help children discriminate, classify, and organize the impressions they receive from the world. Each scientifically designed material isolates one quality and invites careful, hands-on exploration.
Children identify and refine concepts such as size, shape, colour, taste, temperature, and sound. Through this work, they develop awareness of their environment and strengthen the intellect through direct experience.
Language activities support oral language, listening, interpretation, reading, and writing. Children begin by expanding their vocabulary and learning the phonetic sounds of the letters in the alphabet.
As their confidence grows, they read phonetically, learn phonograms and sight words, and develop the ability to decode words and understand text. Language gives children the freedom to explore ideas, communicate clearly, and create wonderful stories.
Montessori mathematics takes children from the concrete to the abstract through manipulation, experimentation, and invention. Working with carefully designed materials helps children experience that mathematics makes sense.
Children count quantities, identify numerals, sequence numbers, and explore addition, multiplication, subtraction, and division at a concrete level. These experiences develop a strong mathematical mind and a lasting enjoyment of learning.
Cultural Studies invites children to explore the larger world. Over a rich three-year cycle, they learn about the people, terrain, animals, and cultures of each continent.
Children also investigate the physical world around them and learn the scientific names for plants and animals. Geography, zoology, botany, physics, earth science, and social studies help them build a connected understanding of the world.
